This single compressor water cooled screw chiller uses one twin-rotor screw compressor with a shell-and-tube condenser on a water circuit. Heat is rejected to condenser water, which is circulated to a cooling tower or other heat rejection device provided as site scope. The arrangement is used where the plant room footprint is constrained, where the chiller cannot be installed outdoors, or where the cooling load is more efficiently rejected to water than to ambient air.

Compared with an air-cooled chiller, the water-cooled unit has a significantly smaller footprint because the condenser is a compact shell-and-tube exchanger rather than a large coil bank with fans. The trade-off is the requirement for cooling tower, condenser water pumps, and condenser water treatment, all of which are outside the chiller supply.

Chiller Configuration

Screw compressor Single twin-rotor screw compressor with slide valve capacity control from 25% to 100%. Independent oil circuit with oil cooler and filter. Continuous compression suited to sustained industrial duty.
Water-cooled condenser Shell-and-tube condenser with enhanced tubes on the water side. Condenser water connections on the unit frame. Design condenser water 30°C in, 35°C out, with a fouling factor allowance included in the capacity rating.
Evaporator Shell-and-tube evaporator on the chilled water side, with connections for the process circuit. Insulated shell to prevent condensation where chilled water is below ambient dew point.
Control panel Controller managing compressor loading, oil management, and safety interlocks. Condenser water flow switch and chilled water flow switch both interlocked to the compressor.

Commercial and Technical Advantages

Compact plant room footprint The shell-and-tube condenser occupies a fraction of the space required by an air-cooled coil bank. Relevant where the plant room is constrained or where the chiller must be installed indoors with no external wall available for condenser airflow.
Higher efficiency than air-cooled Water-cooled condensers operate at lower condensing temperatures than air-cooled equivalents under summer design conditions, which improves the COP. The 3.6 reference value applies at 30/35°C condenser water; the figure varies with condenser water temperature.
Slide valve capacity control Stepless capacity control from 25% to 100% avoids the fixed steps of multiple scroll compressors. For a single-compressor machine, this provides part-load control within the range of one machine rather than through staging.
Flow interlocks on both circuits Chilled water and condenser water flow switches are both interlocked to the compressor. Loss of condenser water flow stops the compressor before high pressure trip, protecting the compressor from a condition that air-cooled units do not face.
Oil management Independent oil circuit with oil cooler, filter, and oil level monitoring. Oil analysis is the primary condition indicator for a screw compressor, and the unit is arranged for oil sampling without breaking the refrigerant circuit.
Monitoring of both circuits Modbus RTU registers expose chilled water and condenser water temperatures, compressor load, slide valve position, oil pressure and temperature, and alarm codes for integration with the plant BMS.

Deployment Contexts

01 Indoor plant rooms without external walls Basement or internal plant rooms where an air-cooled condenser cannot be accommodated and where condenser water can be routed to a cooling tower on the roof.
02 Space-constrained installations Facilities where plant room floor area is limited and the smaller footprint of a water-cooled chiller is the deciding factor against an air-cooled alternative.
03 Existing cooling tower infrastructure Sites that already operate a cooling tower and condenser water circuit, where a water-cooled chiller connects to existing infrastructure and avoids a new air-cooled installation.
04 High ambient conditions Locations where summer ambient temperature reduces air-cooled capacity significantly, and where water cooling maintains condensing temperature at a more stable level through the year.

Selection and Installation Notes

Scope boundary The chiller supply covers the unit and its internal circuits. Cooling tower, condenser water pumps, condenser water piping, water treatment, and the electrical supply to those items are site scope. Confirm the boundary between chiller and site infrastructure before ordering.
Condenser water conditions Capacity and COP are rated at 30°C condenser water in and 35°C out. Higher condenser water temperature reduces capacity and COP. Confirm the actual condenser water design temperatures from the cooling tower selection; the figures stated should be used for capacity selection.
Water quality and treatment Condenser water requires treatment against scale, corrosion, and biological growth. The fouling factor allowance in the rating assumes treated water. Where the site does not operate a treatment programme, capacity will degrade over time and warranty on the condenser may be affected.
Single compressor risk A single compressor is a single point of failure. Where the plant cannot tolerate a complete cooling outage, a dual compressor arrangement or a second chiller should be considered. The single compressor configuration suits sites where a planned shutdown can be accommodated.
Structural and access At 2850 kg dry, the unit requires a structural slab and a rigging plan. Confirm plant room access route, door widths, and lifting equipment before delivery. The unit must be positioned with space for tube bundle removal on the condenser end where tube cleaning is planned.
Maintenance interval Oil analysis annually, with oil change per analysis result. Condenser tube cleaning annually or per water quality. Slide valve operation check annually. Oil filter per manufacturer schedule. Condenser water treatment verification with the site contractor.

Procurement FAQ

The platform covers 150 kW to 450 kW at 12°C chilled water with 30/35°C condenser water. Capacity varies with both chilled water and condenser water temperature; provide both design temperatures for the applicable figure. Above this range, a dual compressor arrangement is normally specified.

The chiller requires 560 L/min of condenser water at 30°C in and 35°C out for the reference capacity, which corresponds to rejecting the cooling load plus compressor power. The cooling tower must be selected for that heat rejection at the site design wet bulb temperature. Pump head depends on the site pipework and is outside the chiller supply.

A remote-condenser variant is available for installation where the condenser must be located separately from the compressor section, or where an existing condenser is to be reused. This is a different configuration from the standard packaged unit and is quoted on application with the pipe run and elevation stated.

The condenser water flow switch signals the controller, which stops the compressor before the high pressure trip is reached. An alarm is raised and the dry-contact relay changes state. The compressor will not restart until flow is restored and the restart delay has elapsed. This protects the compressor from a high-pressure condition caused by loss of heat rejection.

Dimensional drawing including tube bundle removal space, wiring diagram, capacity and COP table against both chilled water and condenser water temperature, part-load performance data, compressor datasheet including oil charge and slide valve range, condenser and evaporator pressure drop curves, refrigerant data sheet, Modbus register map, factory test record, and declaration of conformity under LVD and EMC directives.

Standard warranty is 24 months from commissioning or 30 months from shipment. Compressor coverage extends to 60 months, conditional on documented oil analysis. Service parts including compressors, slide valve components, oil filters, and controllers are held for a minimum of 10 years. Warranty on the condenser is conditional on a maintained water treatment programme.
