This industrial glycol water chiller is specified for process cooling applications where the chilled fluid must operate below the freezing point of water, or where the fluid circuit is exposed to ambient temperatures below 0°C and freeze protection is required. The unit is configured for ethylene glycol or propylene glycol mixtures at concentrations from 20% to 50% by volume, with outlet temperatures down to -25°C.

Glycol affects both heat transfer and pump performance, so the refrigeration circuit, evaporator, and pump are selected for the specific concentration and outlet temperature rather than being a water chiller derated after the fact. The concentration, glycol type, and minimum outlet temperature must be specified at order stage so that capacity, flow, and pump head are calculated for the actual fluid.

Glycol Selection Guide

Glycol concentration Freeze protection Capacity effect Typical application
20% ethylene -8°C -5% capacity Outdoor circuits, mild freeze risk
30% ethylene -15°C -10% capacity Standard low-temperature process cooling
40% ethylene -24°C -16% capacity Cold storage, low-temperature reactors
50% propylene -33°C -22% capacity Food contact, pharmaceutical, non-toxic requirement

Commercial and Technical Advantages

Circuit designed for glycol Evaporator, pump, and piping sized for the specified glycol concentration rather than a derated water chiller. Capacity, flow, and head figures in the submittal reflect the actual fluid, not water performance with a correction factor applied.
Compatible wetted materials Stainless steel evaporator, bronze or stainless pump, and EPDM seals throughout. Glycol mixtures require attention to material compatibility; components are specified to suit both ethylene and propylene glycol.
Ethylene or propylene option Ethylene glycol offers better heat transfer and lower viscosity for a given concentration. Propylene glycol is specified where the fluid may contact food, pharmaceuticals, or where non-toxicity is required, at the cost of reduced capacity and higher pump load.
Low-temperature control Electronic expansion valve and hot-gas bypass regulate evaporator temperature at low setpoints. Anti-freeze protection monitors evaporator leaving temperature and limits compressor output to prevent freeze-up at the heat exchanger.
Protection and alarm suite Alarms for low flow, low level, high and low refrigerant pressure, compressor overload, and low evaporator temperature. Dry-contact alarm relay for connection to plant interlock or annunciator panel.
Plant control integration Modbus RTU standard, with optional BACnet or PROFINET. Registers expose leaving and returning fluid temperature, flow status, valve position, alarm codes, and runtime hours for integration with plant SCADA.

Deployment Contexts

01 Cold storage and blast freezing Cooling of condensing units and process equipment in cold stores, and secondary refrigerant circuits where glycol replaces HFC refrigerant in occupied spaces.
02 Chemical and pharmaceutical reactors Jacket cooling on reactors operating at low temperature, where propylene glycol is specified for non-toxicity or where the fluid may contact process materials.
03 Outdoor process circuits Chilled water loops routed outdoors or through unheated areas where freeze protection is required and water alone would risk pipe damage during winter shutdown.
04 Laboratory and test facilities Environmental chambers, thermal test rigs, and material testing equipment requiring controlled low-temperature coolant over extended operating periods.

Selection and Installation Notes

Specify concentration at order Capacity, flow, and pump head are calculated for the specified glycol type and concentration. Changing the concentration after delivery alters performance and may require pump or expansion valve changes. State glycol type, concentration, and minimum outlet temperature on the order.
Inhibitor package Glycol requires a corrosion inhibitor package and periodic testing. Specify inhibited glycol rather than automotive antifreeze. Inhibitor concentration should be tested annually and replenished as recommended by the glycol supplier.
Flow and pressure drop Glycol viscosity is higher than water, increasing pressure drop through the circuit. Verify that the equipment-side pressure drop plus pipework losses remain within the pump's available head at the specified flow. Provide the circuit layout for confirmation.
Expansion allowance Glycol mixtures expand more than water across the operating temperature range. The tank is sized with allowance, but the external circuit should include expansion volume where the loop is long. Provide the loop volume for verification.
Heat rejection and ambient The condenser rejects the full cooling load plus compressor power. Where the unit is installed outdoors, confirm the ambient range against the unit rating; low ambient operation requires the optional condenser pressure control.
Maintenance interval Strainer cleaning quarterly. Glycol concentration and inhibitor testing annually, with top-up as required. Condenser coil cleaning quarterly in dusty environments. Refrigerant charge, pressure switch, and anti-freeze protection verification annually.

Procurement FAQ

Ethylene glycol provides better heat transfer and lower viscosity for the same freeze protection, resulting in a smaller unit for a given load. Propylene glycol is specified where the fluid may contact food, pharmaceuticals, or potable water systems, or where leakage into an occupied area is a concern. Propylene is non-toxic but requires roughly 20% more flow for the same duty.

At 30% ethylene glycol, capacity is approximately 10% lower than the equivalent water chiller. At 50% propylene glycol, the reduction is approximately 22%. These figures are built into the submittal capacity table, which reflects the specified fluid rather than water performance with a correction factor applied afterwards.

The unit will operate across a limited range of concentration, but capacity, flow, and pump head change with viscosity. A significant change may require a different expansion valve setting or pump. Contact the factory before altering the concentration; capacity figures for the new concentration should be obtained rather than estimated.

Inhibited glycol should be tested annually for concentration and inhibitor level, with top-up as recommended by the glycol supplier. Depleted inhibitors allow corrosion of the evaporator and circuit. Automotive antifreeze is not suitable as it lacks the inhibitor package required for closed-loop industrial circuits.

Dimensional drawing, wiring diagram, capacity table for the specified glycol type and concentration, pump curve with glycol viscosity correction, refrigerant data sheet, Modbus register map, installation and commissioning checklist, and declaration of conformity under LVD and EMC directives.

Standard warranty is 24 months from commissioning or 30 months from shipment. Compressor coverage extends to 60 months. Warranty on the evaporator and pump is conditional on documented glycol testing and inhibitor maintenance. Service parts including compressors, pumps, controllers, and expansion valves are held for a minimum of 10 years.
