LOW AMBIENT RANGE

Low Ambient Temperature Air Cooled Chiller

Air-cooled cooling for outdoor installations down to -25°C ambient · 30kW-300kW · Head pressure control

-25°C Minimum ambient
+43°C Maximum ambient
18 bar Minimum head pressure held

This low ambient air cooled chiller is specified for installations where the chiller operates outdoors or in unheated plant rooms and is exposed to ambient temperatures well below the design condition. A standard air-cooled chiller loses head pressure as ambient falls, and below a certain point the expansion valve loses control, the evaporator starves, and the compressor is at risk of liquid return.

The unit addresses this with a head pressure control package: variable-speed condenser fans combined with a fan cycling sequence, plus an optional condenser flooding valve on smaller capacities. Head pressure is held at a minimum of 18 bar, so the expansion valve retains control across the full ambient range down to -25°C.

Low Ambient Operating Range

+43°C to +25°C Full fan speed Condenser fans at maximum. Head pressure above the minimum threshold; standard expansion valve control.
+25°C to 0°C Modulating fans Fan speed reduces in proportion to falling ambient. Head pressure held at the minimum threshold. Most operating hours fall in this band for most sites.
0°C to -15°C Fan cycling plus modulation Fans cycle on and off under controller supervision while modulating within each cycle. Head pressure held; low ambient fan logic active.
-15°C to -25°C Flooding valve or fan disable Condenser flooding valve holds receiver pressure on smaller units; larger units may disable fans entirely for periods. Confirm configuration at selection.

Commercial and Technical Advantages

Head pressure held at 18 bar The controller maintains minimum head pressure rather than allowing it to fall with ambient. This keeps the expansion valve in its control range and prevents evaporator starvation, which is the mechanism by which standard chillers fail in low ambient conditions.
Variable-speed EC fans EC fans modulate continuously rather than stepping between fixed speeds. This gives smoother head pressure control and reduces the fan cycling that occurs with on/off fan control, which extends fan and contactor life.
Optional flooding valve For units up to 80kW, a condenser flooding valve holds receiver pressure by restricting liquid drain as ambient falls. This provides positive control at the lowest ambients without relying solely on fan logic. Available as an option at order stage.
Freeze protection for the water circuit Evaporator leaving temperature is monitored, and the controller stops the compressor before the water side approaches freezing. Where the circuit is exposed to ambient below 0°C during shutdown, glycol is required; the unit does not protect standing water from freezing.
Outdoor-rated enclosure Casing and electrical enclosure rated for outdoor installation, with rain shields over the electrical compartment and heaters on the controller where condensation risk exists at low ambient. Confirm the installation location against the unit rating.
Monitoring of head pressure control Modbus RTU registers expose ambient temperature, head pressure, fan speed, and flooding valve position where fitted. This allows the plant operator to verify that low ambient control is functioning rather than discovering it at the first cold snap.

Deployment Contexts

01 Outdoor process cooling Chillers installed on roof slabs or beside process equipment where ambient falls below zero for part of the year and a standard air-cooled unit would lose control.
02 Unheated plant rooms Plant rooms without heating where ambient tracks outdoor temperature and the chiller must continue operating through winter for a year-round cooling demand.
03 Cold climate facilities Industrial sites in cold or continental climates where the cooling load exists year-round but ambient falls well below the standard chiller's operating limit.
04 Seasonal commissioning risk Projects commissioned in autumn or winter where the chiller must operate at low ambient before the heating or process load brings the plant room up to design temperature.

Selection and Installation Notes

Confirm minimum ambient The -25°C limit applies to operation, not to storage or standby. Where the unit is shut down at lower ambient, the water circuit still requires freeze protection. Provide the site's design minimum ambient and the expected operating profile for confirmation.
Fan and flooding control Fan logic is standard on all capacities. The flooding valve option is available up to 80kW. For units above 80kW, low ambient control relies on fan logic and receiver sizing; confirm the expected minimum ambient and load at that condition for evaluation.
Glycol requirement The unit protects the evaporator from freezing during operation but does not protect standing water during shutdown. Where the circuit may be exposed to below-zero ambient when stopped, glycol is required. Specify the concentration for the lowest expected ambient.
Wind and snow Outdoor installation requires attention to prevailing wind across the condenser and snow accumulation at the coil. Where the unit is exposed to prevailing wind, specify the wind deflector option. Confirm snow clearance requirements for the roof or slab.
Structural and access At 780 kg dry, the unit requires suitable slab and lifting equipment. Confirm roof loading capacity and access route before delivery. The unit must remain accessible for coil cleaning in all seasons.
Maintenance interval Coil cleaning quarterly, more frequently where the unit is near trees or industrial discharge. Head pressure control verification each autumn before the cold season. Flooding valve operation check annually where fitted. Refrigerant charge and pressure switch verification annually.

Procurement FAQ

Head pressure falls with ambient. Below a certain point the expansion valve loses control, the evaporator starves, and suction pressure drops. Protection devices then trip or the compressor is at risk of damage from low suction. The low ambient package holds head pressure at a minimum so that the expansion valve retains control across the full range.

For most sites down to -15°C, fan modulation with cycling logic is sufficient. The flooding valve provides more positive control at the lowest ambients and is recommended where the design ambient is below -15°C or where the unit runs at low load during cold weather. The valve is available up to 80kW; above that, fan logic and receiver sizing are used.

The controller monitors evaporator leaving temperature and stops the compressor before the water side approaches freezing. This protects during operation. Standing water in a stopped circuit is not protected, so glycol is required where the circuit may be exposed to below-zero ambient during shutdown. Specify the concentration for the lowest expected ambient.

Where commissioning occurs in warm weather, the control logic can be verified by forcing head pressure setpoint response and observing fan modulation, and by confirming receiver sizing and flooding valve operation where fitted. The commissioning checklist covers head pressure control verification steps. Verification is repeated before the first cold season.

Dimensional drawing, wiring diagram, capacity table against water temperature and ambient, low ambient operating envelope, head pressure control description, refrigerant data sheet, Modbus register map including head pressure and fan speed, commissioning checklist, and declaration of conformity under LVD and EMC directives.

Standard warranty is 24 months from commissioning or 30 months from shipment. Compressor coverage extends to 60 months. EC fans, flooding valves, and controllers are held as service parts for a minimum of 10 years. Warranty on low ambient control components is conditional on the annual head pressure control verification being documented.
