This industrial chiller is supplied with a digital PID temperature controller that provides a numeric setpoint and readout, alarm thresholds, and communication access to the control loop, in place of a mechanical thermostat. The controller measures leaving water temperature from a PT100 sensor and modulates compressor and fan output to hold the setpoint rather than switching at a fixed differential.

The configuration is specified where the process requires a defined and repeatable water temperature, where operators need a numeric readout rather than an indicator light, or where the control loop must be monitored and adjusted remotely. Typical applications include process cooling in laboratories, plastics processing, laser systems, and equipment where temperature affects product or measurement results.

Control Functions

Setpoint and readout Setpoint entered from the front panel in 0.1°C increments. Display shows measured value and setpoint simultaneously. Settings retained through power interruption without battery backup.
PID with auto-tune Proportional, integral, and derivative terms adjustable from the panel. Auto-tune function derives initial values from the actual circuit response, avoiding manual tuning by trial at commissioning.
Alarm thresholds High and low temperature alarms with independent setpoints and time delays. Alarm outputs are SPDT relays for connection to the process interlock or plant annunciator. Alarm history retained.
Communication access Modbus RTU exposes setpoint, measured value, PID terms, alarm state, and alarm history. Setpoint can be changed remotely where the site's control philosophy permits it.

Commercial and Technical Advantages

Tighter control than a thermostat PID control holds water temperature within ±0.3°C of setpoint, compared with the wider band typical of a mechanical thermostat switching at a fixed differential. Relevant where process temperature affects product quality or measurement accuracy.
Numeric readout for operators Measured temperature and setpoint are displayed numerically. Operators can read the actual condition rather than inferring it from an indicator light, which supports troubleshooting and process records.
Auto-tune at commissioning The auto-tune function derives PID values from the actual circuit response, so the loop is not left with default terms that produce overshoot or sluggish response. Tuning is repeatable if the circuit is later modified.
Separate alarm and control setpoints Alarm thresholds are set independently of the control setpoint, with time delays to prevent nuisance trips during load changes. This is a practical requirement where alarms are connected to a process interlock.
Remote access to the loop Setpoint, measured value, and PID terms are accessible via Modbus. Parameters can be reviewed and adjusted from a plant system rather than requiring a visit to the chiller, which matters for remotely located units.
Replaceable controller module The controller is a replaceable module with plug-in connections. Replacement does not require rewiring the panel, and configurations can be transferred. Controller modules are held as service parts for 10 years.

Deployment Contexts

01 Laboratory and analytical cooling Instruments and test rigs where the coolant temperature is a recorded process parameter, and where a numeric readout and stable setpoint are required for the test record.
02 Plastics and mould temperature control Mould cooling where coolant temperature affects cycle time and part dimensions, and where a defined setpoint must be held across the production run.
03 Laser and optical equipment Laser sources and optics where coolant temperature affects beam stability, and where the controller setpoint is part of the equipment's specified operating conditions.
04 Remotely monitored installations Sites where the chiller is monitored from a plant system rather than attended locally, and where setpoint and alarm state must be accessible over Modbus.

Selection and Installation Notes

Sensor location and immersion The PT100 sensor is installed in the leaving water line at the factory with a defined immersion depth. Where the site requires a sensor at a different location, the control response changes and the PID terms must be re-tuned. Confirm the measurement point against the process requirement.
Setpoint and alarm configuration Control setpoint and alarm thresholds are configured at commissioning. Alarm time delays should be set against the process response time to avoid nuisance trips during load changes. Record the configured values for maintenance reference.
Auto-tune procedure Auto-tune requires the circuit to be at stable flow and a representative load. Running auto-tune at no load or with fluctuating flow produces unsuitable terms. The procedure is described in the commissioning checklist and should be repeated if the circuit is modified.
Remote setpoint changes Where setpoint may be changed remotely, define the permitted range and the authority of the plant system against the local panel. Restricting the remote range prevents an inadvertent setpoint change from affecting the process or the chiller operating envelope.
Controller environment The controller front is rated IP54, but the panel interior must remain within the specified ambient range. Where the plant room is hot, confirm the panel cooling arrangement. Controller faults attributable to over-temperature are not covered by warranty.
Maintenance interval Verify sensor accuracy annually against a reference thermometer. Check alarm function and relay operation annually. Review PID terms where the circuit has been modified. Strainer cleaning quarterly. Condenser coil cleaning quarterly. Refrigerant verification annually.

Procurement FAQ

A thermostat switches at a fixed differential and gives a wider temperature band with no numeric readout. A digital PID controller measures the actual temperature, displays it numerically, and modulates output continuously to hold a tighter band. It also provides separate alarm thresholds and communication access, which a mechanical thermostat does not.

Yes, setpoint is writable over Modbus. Whether remote changes are permitted depends on the site's control philosophy. The controller can be configured with a restricted writable range so that remote changes cannot move the setpoint outside the process or chiller operating envelope. Confirm the intended arrangement at commissioning.

The controller has an auto-tune function that derives initial PID values from the circuit response under stable flow and representative load. Manual adjustment is available where the auto-tune result requires refinement. Tuning should be repeated if the circuit or load characteristics change significantly.

The controller detects an open or short circuit at the sensor input, stops the compressor, and raises an alarm. This prevents operation without temperature feedback. The sensor is a replaceable PT100 element; spares are held as service parts.

Dimensional drawing, wiring diagram including controller I/O, capacity table against water temperature, pump curve, controller manual with parameter list, Modbus register map, refrigerant data sheet, commissioning checklist including auto-tune procedure, and declaration of conformity under LVD and EMC directives.

Standard warranty is 24 months from commissioning or 30 months from shipment. Compressor coverage extends to 60 months. Sensors and controller modules are held as service parts for a minimum of 10 years. Warranty on the controller is conditional on installation within the specified ambient range.
