This low temperature industrial water chiller is specified for process cooling where the outlet temperature must be maintained well below the freezing point of water. Applications include jacket cooling on chemical reactors operating at low temperature, pharmaceutical crystallisation, environmental test chambers, and material testing rigs requiring controlled coolant at -20°C or below.

Because a single-stage refrigeration circuit cannot reach these temperatures economically, the unit uses either a two-stage compressor arrangement or a cascade circuit, depending on the required outlet temperature. The coolant is a glycol or brine mixture, and the evaporator, pump, and pipework are selected for the viscosity and heat transfer characteristics of the specified fluid rather than for water.

Circuit Arrangement by Outlet Temperature

+20°C to -5°C Single-stage, economised 20–30% glycol Single compressor with economiser. Suitable for freeze protection and mild low-temperature duty where the primary purpose is protection rather than deep cooling.
-5°C to -18°C Two-stage compressor 30–40% glycol Two-stage compression with intercooling. The most common arrangement for reactor jacket cooling and low-temperature process duty in this band.
-18°C to -35°C Cascade 40–50% glycol or brine Two separate circuits with a cascade heat exchanger. The high-stage circuit rejects to ambient, the low-stage circuit reaches the low outlet temperature. Required for the lower end of the range.

Commercial and Technical Advantages

Circuit matched to duty Single-stage, two-stage, or cascade arrangement is selected against the required outlet temperature rather than a standard water chiller derated. Capacity, compressor staging, and expansion device are configured for the duty, and the capacity table reflects the specified temperature.
Circuit designed for glycol or brine Evaporator, pump, and pipework sized for the viscosity and heat transfer of the specified fluid. Flow and pressure drop figures in the submittal reflect the actual mixture, not water with a correction factor applied afterwards.
Freeze protection interlocks Evaporator leaving temperature monitored with compressor stop before the fluid approaches its freeze point. The controller also monitors suction pressure and limits staging to prevent operation outside the safe envelope at low evaporating temperatures.
Stable low-temperature control Electronic expansion valve with superheat control and hot-gas bypass where required. Temperature stability of ±1.0°C at the outlet, which matters where reactor jacket temperature affects reaction rate or crystal formation.
Materials for the fluid Brazed plate evaporator in stainless steel, EPDM seals, and stainless or bronze pump parts. Brine mixtures in particular require attention to material compatibility, and components are selected for the specified fluid.
Monitoring and data Modbus RTU registers expose outlet and return temperature, suction and discharge pressure, stage status, and alarm codes. Data supports diagnosis of low-temperature performance after installation rather than relying on site observation.

Deployment Contexts

01 Chemical reactor jacket cooling Jacketed reactors operating at low temperature where reaction selectivity or exotherm control depends on coolant temperature, and where the chiller must respond to changes in reaction heat output.
02 Pharmaceutical crystallisation Crystallisation and precipitation processes where cooling rate and final temperature affect crystal size and purity, and where controlled ramping of coolant temperature is required.
03 Environmental test chambers Chambers and thermal test rigs requiring a coolant supply at controlled low temperature for heat removal from the chamber evaporator or from the test article.
04 Material and component testing Low-temperature testing of materials, seals, and components where the coolant circuit must hold a specified temperature for the duration of the test, often over extended periods.

Selection and Installation Notes

Capacity at the operating point Capacity falls significantly as outlet temperature decreases: 52 kW at -10°C, 38 kW at -20°C, 24 kW at -30°C on the reference configuration. Select on the capacity at the actual operating temperature, not on a nominal figure. Provide the required outlet temperature and load for the applicable figure.
Coolant selection and concentration Ethylene glycol offers better heat transfer; propylene glycol is specified where the fluid may contact food or pharmaceuticals. Concentration must be stated at order stage, as capacity, flow, and pump head are calculated for the specified mixture. Changing concentration after delivery alters performance.
Insulation of the circuit At low outlet temperature, uninsulated pipework and fittings will condense moisture and may ice. The external circuit must be insulated and vapour-sealed by the installer. The unit's internal tank and pipework are insulated, but site pipework is outside the supply.
Heat rejection and ambient The cascade arrangement rejects the total compressor power of both stages at the condenser. Confirm that the plant room ventilation can dissipate this heat. Low ambient operation of the high-stage condenser requires head pressure control, which is included as standard.
Refrigerant handling The low stage may use a refrigerant with a high GWP or specific handling requirements depending on the outlet temperature. Service must follow local regulations. The low-stage circuit should only be serviced by technicians qualified for the specific refrigerant used.
Maintenance interval Strainer cleaning quarterly. Glycol concentration and inhibitor testing annually. Condenser coil cleaning quarterly. Low-stage refrigerant and pressure verification annually. Insulation condition inspection annually, as damaged insulation at low temperature causes condensation and ice formation.

Procurement FAQ

Two-stage compression is normally used between -5°C and -18°C outlet. Cascade is required below approximately -18°C, where a single refrigerant circuit cannot reach the evaporating temperature economically. The boundary depends on the specific refrigerant and load; provide the required outlet temperature and load for confirmation of the arrangement.

No. Below 0°C the coolant must be a glycol or brine mixture. Water would freeze in the evaporator and damage it. The required concentration depends on the lowest outlet temperature and the lowest ambient the circuit may see when stopped; both should be stated at order stage.

An electronic expansion valve maintains superheat, and hot-gas bypass is used where the load falls below the minimum stable compressor output. This holds outlet temperature within ±1.0°C. Where a tighter band is required for a specific process, that requirement should be stated at enquiry stage for evaluation.

All site pipework carrying coolant at low temperature must be insulated with closed-cell insulation and vapour-sealed at joints and fittings. Uninsulated sections will condense moisture from the air and may ice. Insulation of the site circuit is installer scope and is not included with the unit.

Dimensional drawing, wiring diagram, capacity table against outlet temperature for the specified coolant, pump curve with glycol viscosity correction, refrigerant data sheet per circuit, cascade heat exchanger specification where applicable, Modbus register map, installation and commissioning checklist, and declaration of conformity under LVD and EMC directives.

Standard warranty is 24 months from commissioning or 30 months from shipment. Compressor coverage extends to 60 months per stage. Warranty on the evaporator and pump is conditional on documented glycol testing and inhibitor maintenance. Service parts including compressors, expansion valves, controllers, and pumps are held for a minimum of 10 years.
