Inverter Cabinet Air Conditioner

Variable-speed compressor control for partial-load efficiency · 1500W-3500W · 230V / 400V · IP54-IP55

30–90 Hz Compressor speed range
±0.8°C Temperature stability
25–35% Energy reduction at partial load

This inverter cabinet air conditioner uses a variable-speed compressor driven by an integrated inverter, allowing cooling output to track the actual thermal load in the cabinet rather than cycling between full capacity and off. The compressor modulates across a 30 to 90 Hz range, and the condenser and evaporator fans are speed-controlled in coordination with compressor output.

The configuration is specified where cabinet load varies significantly over the day or season, where temperature stability matters for sensitive electronics, or where the site is subject to energy limits. At partial load, the unit operates at reduced compressor speed rather than cycling, which reduces start-stop wear on the compressor and lowers average power consumption compared with fixed-speed units.

Control architecture
Load sensing Return-air and supply-air sensors plus a condenser pressure transducer feed the controller. Load is calculated from the temperature error and its rate of change rather than from a fixed differential.
Inverter drive The inverter converts the incoming AC supply to a variable-frequency output for the compressor. Compressor speed is commanded from 30 to 90 Hz in response to the calculated load.
Fan coordination EC fans on both coils follow compressor speed through a mapped curve, so airflow and refrigerant flow remain matched across the operating range. Head pressure is held within a target band.
Protection and limits Discharge temperature, suction pressure, and inverter heatsink temperature are monitored continuously. Speed is reduced or the compressor stopped where a limit is approached, then resumed when conditions return to range.

Commercial and Technical Advantages

Partial-load efficiency Compressor speed follows load instead of cycling at full capacity. At 50% load, average power consumption is typically 25% to 35% lower than a fixed-speed unit of the same nominal capacity. Relevant where cabinet load drops overnight or seasonally.
Tight temperature control Continuous modulation holds cabinet temperature within ±0.8°C of setpoint, compared with the wider band typical of on/off control. Specified where electronics or measurement equipment is sensitive to temperature variation.
Reduced compressor cycling Modulation replaces on/off cycling, reducing the number of compressor starts per day. Fewer starts reduce contactor and winding stress. Compressor start count is logged and available via the communication interface.
Low inrush current Soft-start through the inverter limits inrush to approximately 1.2× nominal, compared with 5× to 7× for direct-on-line fixed-speed units. Relevant where cabinet cooling shares a supply with other loads or where generator capacity is limited.
Operating data availability Modbus RTU registers expose compressor speed, inverter output frequency, discharge temperature, suction pressure, and cumulative energy consumption. Data available for energy reporting and maintenance planning.
Service parts program Inverter modules, compressors, EC fans, and controllers held as service parts for a minimum of 10 years. Inverter module replacement does not require opening the refrigeration circuit.

Operating Envelope

High ambient, high load Compressor runs near 90 Hz. Capacity approaches nominal rating. Condenser fan at maximum speed to hold head pressure.
High ambient, partial load Compressor reduces to the speed required to hold setpoint, typically 45 to 70 Hz. Main efficiency gain occurs in this band.
Low ambient, low load Compressor runs at minimum speed, 30 Hz. Condenser fan modulates down to prevent coil over-cooling and liquid migration.
Below minimum load Where load falls below the 30 Hz minimum, the controller cycles the compressor at minimum speed with an extended off period rather than running continuously.
Protection limit approached Speed reduces to hold discharge temperature and inverter heatsink temperature within limits. If the limit persists, the compressor stops and restarts after a configured delay.

Deployment Contexts

01 Cabinets with varying daily load Enclosures housing equipment that operates intermittently, such as drive cabinets on batch processes or test equipment run on shifts, where fixed-speed cycling would cause temperature swings.
02 Energy-limited or off-grid sites Solar-powered and hybrid sites where average power consumption determines battery and array sizing, and where low inrush reduces demand on limited generator capacity.
03 Temperature-sensitive electronics Cabinets with measurement, metrology, or precision electronics where temperature variation affects accuracy and where ±0.8°C stability is specified rather than a wider on/off band.
04 Shared-supply installations Cabinets where cooling shares a supply with other loads and the inrush of a fixed-speed compressor would require oversized protection or cause voltage dip affecting adjacent equipment.

Selection and Installation Notes

Sizing for inverter units Size on peak load rather than average, since the unit must cover the maximum condition. The efficiency benefit is realised at partial load; oversizing does not reduce peak capacity but does lower average speed and increase operating time in the efficient band.
Inverter input filtering The unit includes an EMC filter on the inverter input. Where the supply is shared with sensitive measurement equipment, verify that conducted emissions at the installation point meet the site's EMC requirements; an additional filter can be specified.
Cable and protection Copper conductors 2.5 mm² minimum. Dedicated 2-pole breaker, 16 A C-curve. Grounding resistance ≤ 4 Ω. Verify that the supply is not subject to frequent short interruptions, as each interruption restarts the soft-start sequence.
Clearance Maintain 350mm at the condenser inlet and 550mm at the discharge. Condenser airflow modulates with speed but the maximum clearance is set by the full-speed condition and must not be reduced.
Refrigerant handling R454C is classified A2L (mildly flammable). Service must follow local regulations for A2L refrigerants, including ventilation, leak detection, and technician certification. Inverter speed settings are factory configured and should not be altered without factory guidance.
Maintenance interval Filter inspection every 2 to 3 months. Condenser coil cleaning quarterly. Annual check of refrigerant charge, inverter heatsink cleanliness and fan operation, and logged compressor start count. Heatsink dust accumulation is the most common cause of derating in plant environments.

Procurement FAQ

Saving depends on the load profile. Where the cabinet runs at roughly 50% load for most of the operating period, average power consumption is typically 25% to 35% lower than a fixed-speed unit of the same nominal capacity. Where load is near full capacity for most of the time, the difference is small. Provide the site load profile for an estimate based on actual operating conditions.

Speed is commanded by the controller from a load calculation using return and supply air sensors plus condenser pressure. Minimum and maximum speed limits are factory set. Site adjustment of the speed limits is not recommended and should be done only with factory guidance, since limits are set to protect the compressor and inverter.

The unit includes an EMC filter and is CE marked under EMC 2014/30/EU. Where the supply is shared with sensitive measurement equipment, verify conducted emissions at the installation point against the site's requirements. An additional external filter can be specified for installations with strict limits.

After a supply interruption the unit restarts through the soft-start sequence, with a configured delay before compressor start to allow refrigerant pressure equalisation. Frequent short interruptions extend total off time because each restart repeats the delay. Verify supply stability where interruption frequency is high.

Dimensional drawing, wiring diagram, capacity and power curve across the speed range, refrigerant data sheet, Modbus register map including speed and energy registers, mounting template, EMC declaration, and declaration of conformity under LVD and EMC directives. Factory test record including speed range verification is supplied.

Standard warranty is 24 months from commissioning or 30 months from shipment. Compressor and inverter module coverage extends to 60 months. Inverter modules, compressors, EC fans, and controllers are held as service parts for a minimum of 10 years from manufacture. Inverter module replacement does not require opening the refrigeration circuit.
