This industrial chiller with remote condenser is a split system: the chiller section containing the compressor, evaporator, and controls is installed in the plant room, while the condenser is installed separately at a location where heat can be rejected. The two sections are connected by refrigerant pipework installed on site and commissioned by a qualified refrigeration engineer.

The configuration is specified where the plant room cannot accommodate an air-cooled chiller's condenser airflow, where the condenser must be located on a roof or external slab away from the plant room, or where noise and heat rejection need to be kept away from the occupied space. It is also used where the plant room is below grade and condenser airflow is not available at the chiller location.

System Arrangement

Indoor chiller section Compressor, brazed plate evaporator, expansion valve, receiver, and control panel on a single frame. Supplied charged with a holding charge of nitrogen; refrigerant charge is added on site after pipework installation.
Refrigerant pipework Discharge and liquid lines installed on site by a refrigeration contractor. Line sizing, insulation, and support designed for the run. Oil return provisions included where the condenser is above the chiller.
Remote condenser Air-cooled condenser with EC fans and its own electrical supply, mounted on roof or external slab. Fan speed controlled from the chiller section via a signal cable run alongside the refrigerant lines.
Site commissioning Pressure testing, evacuation, and charging carried out on site. Commissioning is a refrigeration task requiring qualified personnel and is not covered by standard electrical commissioning.

Commercial and Technical Advantages

Heat rejection located independently The condenser can be placed on a roof, external slab, or remote compound where ambient air is available and where rejected heat and fan noise do not affect the plant room or occupied areas. This decouples chiller location from condenser location.
Reduced plant room footprint Only the chiller section occupies plant room floor area. The condenser, which on an integral air-cooled unit is a significant part of the footprint and requires clearance for airflow, is located elsewhere.
Noise separated from occupied space Fan noise is the dominant source on an air-cooled chiller. With the condenser remote, the plant room contains only the compressor and pump noise, and the fan noise is located at the condenser position where it can be sited away from sensitive areas.
Below-grade and enclosed plant rooms Where the plant room is below grade or fully enclosed with no external wall, an integral air-cooled chiller cannot reject heat. The split arrangement allows the chiller to be installed in the room and the condenser at grade or on the roof.
Long runs supported by design Line sizing, oil return, and receiver volume are designed for runs up to 60 m equivalent and elevation differences up to 20 m. The system is designed for the stated run rather than being an integral unit with pipework added afterwards.
Service access separated Compressor and controls are accessible in the plant room, while coil cleaning and fan service take place at the condenser location. Coil cleaning, the most frequent maintenance task, does not require entry to the plant room.

Deployment Contexts

01 Basement and below-grade plant rooms Plant rooms without external walls or with insufficient airflow for an integral air-cooled condenser, where the condenser must be located at grade or on the roof.
02 Roof-mounted heat rejection Buildings where the plant room is on an intermediate floor and the roof is used for heat rejection, keeping condenser airflow and fan noise away from the plant room and occupied space.
03 Noise-sensitive locations Sites where the chiller is near occupied space and the condenser must be located away from the building, or where fan noise at the plant room wall would exceed site limits.
04 Retrofit into existing plant rooms Facilities replacing an existing split system where the condenser location and refrigerant pipework already exist, and where the replacement chiller must connect to the existing condenser position.

Selection and Installation Notes

Pipe run must be stated Line sizing, receiver volume, and oil return provisions depend on the actual run and elevation. The maximum figures of 60 m and 20 m apply to properly designed systems; the specific run must be stated at order stage so the system is configured for it. Runs beyond these limits require factory evaluation.
Commissioning is a refrigeration task Pressure testing, evacuation, and charging must be carried out by a qualified refrigeration engineer with the appropriate equipment and certification. This is not covered by standard electrical commissioning and must be planned and costed as a separate scope.
Condenser above or below Elevation direction affects oil return. A condenser above the chiller requires oil traps and specific line design; a condenser below requires attention to liquid column and receiver sizing. Confirm the relative positions before ordering.
Electrical coordination Chiller and condenser have separate power supplies and separate isolation. A control signal cable runs between them for fan speed control, and must be routed with the refrigerant lines or through a separate containment. Coordinate the two supplies in the electrical design.
Line support and insulation Refrigerant lines require support at intervals along the run and insulation on the liquid line. Where the route passes through occupied space or externally, confirm the support method and fire stopping requirements with the building design.
Maintenance interval Condenser coil cleaning quarterly at the remote location. Refrigerant leak inspection along the run annually. Head pressure control verification annually. Compressor and control checks in the plant room annually. Confirm access to the condenser position for coil cleaning in all weather.

Procurement FAQ

Where the existing condenser's capacity, refrigerant, and fan control are compatible, the chiller section can be supplied without a condenser for connection to it. Provide the existing condenser data including capacity at design ambient, refrigerant, fan control method, and connection sizes for evaluation. Compatibility is not assumed.

Pipework installation and charging are site scope, carried out by a qualified refrigeration contractor. The chiller is supplied with a holding charge only. Line sizing and connection details are provided in the installation documentation so that the contractor can design and install the run. Commissioning support from the factory can be arranged separately.

Runs beyond 60 m equivalent or 20 m elevation require factory evaluation, as oil return and pressure drop become critical. Options include larger line sizes, additional oil management measures, or a different compressor configuration. Provide the actual run and elevation for evaluation before committing to the layout.

A low-voltage signal cable runs between the chiller control panel and the condenser, carrying the fan speed command derived from head pressure. The condenser has its own power supply and local control panel. Cable type and maximum length are specified in the installation documentation.

Chiller and condenser dimensional drawings, wiring diagrams for both sections, capacity table against water temperature, refrigerant line sizing and routing guidance including oil return requirements, receiver sizing calculation, interconnecting control cable specification, Modbus register map, and declaration of conformity under LVD and EMC directives.

Standard warranty is 24 months from commissioning or 30 months from shipment. Compressor coverage extends to 60 months. Warranty is conditional on pipework installation and charging being carried out by a qualified refrigeration contractor per the supplied documentation, and on the commissioning record being submitted. Faults attributable to site pipework or charging are not covered.
